Finished assembling the Shrine

Just got the last pieces of walkways done yesterday.
Hopefully it has all dried allright by now, so that I can go to the next step and spraypaint the entire building with a basecoat of black.
If everything goes according to my plan, I won't have to paint the entire building after that, but just paint everything that is supposed to be of another colour than black. This would be all the details on the outside, and some details on the inside as well.
I hope I get to do it that way, as it will save a lot of time and paint. It will still take a long time to finish as there is a lot of details, but since this is a centerpiece it will be worth it.

The black buildings will look good with the dark grey and black ground, and they will get lots of little details that will give each building a special look.

I plan to build the other Shrine of the Aquila that I have as the next building. It will be built strait out of the box, and will be a corner piece. This will not get any extra stuff, so it will look a lot simpler than the shrine that I have built now. But both buildings will get a lot of gold or bronze paint on the big eagle head and the wall section that is on the front, so this will be a very clear contrast to the black of the rest of the bulding. The big Shrine will also have the same metal color on some of the structures that looks like an eagle head, and on some other places of the building.

I will buy a few more buldings, and these will be assembled from my imagination to fit some design ideas I have. I will have two buildings with a bridge between them, and maybe I will have a building that is still rather intact with a Skyshield Landingpad attached to it somwhere, or a building with a short bridge to the skyshield. Looking forward to letting my imagination run free.

Shrine of the Aquila, assembled

Here are some pics of my modified Shrine of the Aquila that I built at Games Workshop Oslo yesterday.
The Shirine is a lot bigger than the original, as it got two extra wall sections, and it has a lot of extra details.

The next step is to prime it black ,and then paint all the details. Pictures of this will come in the future.

The shrine seen from the inside. I will add some more walkways to the front, but I needed the side walkways to dry first as I need to put support beams under them to hold up the back of the walkways.

The left side wall with the added elements from the GW bitbox. The lamp posts on the top seems to indicate that there was a walkway up from the ground there once.

The left wall seen from afar. This shows how tall the building really is, and it is all one wall section. It will be a pain in the butt painting all the skulls on the wall section in the middle.

This is the building seen from the front. The pice on the left front is supposed to be a blast door that has been blown. The real reson for this is that I messed up and assembled the extra wall the wrong way. Still I think it worked out nice.

I Just couldn't help myself seeing what it would look like with a Space Marine up front. This is my Interrogator Chaplain. He too is waiting to get painted up. In the future I believe there will be a lot of Space Marines around this building.

The right side additions are a lot smaller, but still quite nice in my humble opinion.

The last shot is a shot ot the entire right side. Notice the ladder on the wall going up to the walkway that has been blown away. I like to think that this has been a guard room of some sorts, and therefore been blown to pieces in the fighting.

Finally got some modelling done!

It has been a long time without updates, but hopefully this is past me now
I am all but moved in to my new hobby room (but not to the rest of the house yet), and I see I have a lot of miniatures that I would love to start to assemble and paint. It's amazing what you find when you put everything in boxes and unpack the boxes again.

Yesterday I spent several hours at Games Workshop in Oslo on a Scenery workshop. They gave us full access to their bitbox, and I had a blast! Working on my own stuff, talking to fellow hobbyists and helping out some younger kids with a few things that needed some strength (cutting up pices of scenery for battle damage and miniature bases mostly). It was fun throwing ideas around the table, where every voice was heared, from the two 8 year old girls, to the teen boys, through the boys in their 20's and up to me in my early 40's.

I haven't built any Warhammer 40K scenery before so I didn't know anything about the size of the models. So I bought me a Shrine of the Aquila, and found some nice spare walls and some walls and stuff from other sprues in the store bitbox, and started my assembly.
The result is a huge shrine (2 extra wall sections when compared to the original) with some smaller walls on the outside, and some nice detail (at lest I think so).

The Shrine will be the center piece in my ruined 40K city on the nameless (at least so far) black world where my Imperial Guard and Space Marines fight evil forces.

I assembled almost everything yesterday, except from a few walkways inside the building. They need to be glued to the other walkways, and they need to dry first.

The Shrine was a pleassure to work with, but it did give me a few challenges. In store we all worked on paint stations, and I found that my huge Shrine sometimes was a little too big to handle on the paintstation. So I built one wallsection at the time, and left them on the box under my chair to dry as soon as the glue started to settle. Then I took each piece out and added more details to it in turn.
This will not be a problem with terrain building in my own hobby room however, as I don't intend to have a paint station. I will just have a mat to paint on. All my paints are on the shelves right in front of me, so they are easily accessible without a paintstation.

I will make a post presenting my workspace when I get a few more boxes stored away (I need to move a few cabinets from my old hobby room still)

Long time, no see...

There has been a long time since I updted this blog, and it will probably be a little while until my next update with pictures of painted minis.

Since my last update, my father has been terminally ill with cancer, so I spent my afternoons and weekends with him visiting him in the hospitals he was admitted to.
On August 8th, while I was away with the school band I was conducting, to visit Legoland, hold concerts and buy some more stuff for the Lego blog (as mentioned in the last post), my father drew his last beath and died in his sleep.
It was weird to walk arround in an amusement park trying to look happy when I was all sad inside. But no one in the travel company got to know about it until we were back at the motel where we stayed, and then I only told those who needed to know in case I had to leave.

After I got home, most of my time has gone to emptying my parents house, where nothing (except for clothes) has been removed after my mom died in 2009. And we also found a lot of stuff from my Grandmother while we were emptying the house. Then we started to renovate it. The appartment in the basement has been done by ourselves and we have a team of professionals fixing up the main appartment.

So I haven't had much time to work on my miniatures, this year. At the moment all my Warhammer stuff is packed down in boxes, but I hope to move in to the new house in the middle of May, and then I wil set up a new hobby room. For the first time I will share room with my wife who is into scrapbooking, and I think that will be good.

I will post updates as the hobby room gets created, at the moment it is just full of boxes with stuff that is going everywhere else in the house.

Reinforcements for The Gatekeepers

I haven't been working on my miniatures for quite a while. One of the reasons is that I have been working a lot with my Lego collection (as you can see if you visit my Lego blog).

Last weekend I just got a little Warhammer 40K kick, and started the assembly of two Rhino-based vehicles for my Gatekeepers. I know I should have finished my Imperial Guard minis and done the wash on my Space Marine scouts, but I just felt the need to do some real building for a change.
I plan to do the washing of the scouts and some more painting on the Imperial Guard while waiting for the paint to dry between colors and layers on the new vehicles.

The first vehicle is a Vindicator, complete with Siege shield. I might have been a little bit too smart for my own good, as I assembled all that could be assembled seprarately so that I could multitask and paint the parts at the same time and just add them together. This might not have been the best idea for the Storm shield, as I now face a small challenge of getting the shield attached to the siege tank without breaking anything. But I recon it should work with a little patience and a healthy dose of swearwords.
I decided to go for the rocket launcher solution instead of the twin bolters on the trurret, and at precent the rocket launcher seems a little bit wobbly. But I guess this will improve a bit after I have done the painting, and even if it doesn't it will still look good and that is always my main concern.
The only thing missing on this miniature is to add the stormshield to the vehicle, add some extra parts like a radar, smoke launcers and things like that (all is assembled, redy to glue on).
I decided not to add these parts until the stormshield is on, in case I will have to use some mild force to get this done. Wouldn't like to break small pieces that stick out from the body of the vehicle after all...

The second vehicle is the Whirlwind, with the missile solution with six missiles. This is a clean build so far, and no big mistakes on my end.
I haven't gotten so much work done on this as on the Vindicator, but it is comming along nicely. The body is assembled, the main weapon system is mostly assembled, only thing missing is to add the weapon itself to the base by glueing on a little piece on the top. The trick is to do this without spilling too much glue, but I have done this with so many other parts that it should work for this one as well...
Then I have to assemble the front, as done on any other Rhino-based vehicle (except the Vindicator).
Then comes the extras like smoke chargers, searchlight and so on.
I will wait with the extras untill the same parts are glued to the Vindicator, to make sure I don't loose some parts or glue the wrong parts to the wrong model in a whiff of confucion...

Both vehicles have gotten their interior painted, even if I doubt that there would be much room inside these vehicles for transport. The back compatment would probably be filled with missiles or shells, and technical equipment. But I decided to go with it just to make it uniform and nice.

After Games Workshop changed the names and colors on their entire paint range, I'm having some troubles finding the right paint to match my army. But since I haven't painted many vehicles yet, I have decided to use a new color on them (they will have one color, and that will be Kantor Blue), and just take it from there. I still need to find the correct colors for my troops though..

Nothing good happens fast

The title is the name of a slow jazz tune, and I think it suits my situation fine for the moment.
I haven't done any painting since the last blog was written, and I had such high hopes for 2013 as a year to get a lot of stuff painted...
Still in two days time there is February 1st, so it is plenty of time left to fix this.
At least after fixing up my hobby room I find it easier to see what I have to paint...
I still have a few things to do, as I need to get all my sheet music down in to the archive cabinets, and I need to get the last Expedit and the glass cabinets that go inside them. Unfortionately the cabinets are sold out from IKEA for the moment (and I expect that will be the case for quite awhile as they seem to be popular), so I can not get ecverything done exactly as I like them. But as the finances are a little low at the moement as well, that might work out fine.
As I get the sheet music in the archive cabinets, I get to tidy up more of the room and release floor space, and this makes it easier to get a heater going so it gets comfortable to sit down there and work. Hopefully that will increase my speed a little as I have so many miniatures I would like to see finished.
As usual I have already started to think about future projects, even though I have told myself time after time that I need to finish one project at the time. After all, that is one of the reasons my work table is full of unfinished miniatures, and the reason I decided to do a fantasy project and a 40K project every second time.

Cleaned the hobby room

I've just finished working several hours in the basement, in my hobby room. Everything was flowing over, too much had been stuffed in to the room and forgotten about. Not any more!
I removed my old desk (kept the work table though), and added two archive cabinets for my sheet music that has threatened to take over the room for a long time.
This also gives me the top of the cabinets to use for storage, and I managed to store all my large Warhammer FB and 40K boxes there. Plenty of things to sink my claws in to at a later time. 3 towers (4 if I add the ruined tower), 1 large building (with its own tower), two Apocalypse tanks (Baneblade and Shadowsword boxes), lots of tanks and some artillery for my Imperial Guard, two Marine Flyers, one giant spider for my Goblin army and a Thundertusk (or its counterpart) for my Ogres. I also found two Games workshop plastic bags with lots of Ogre sets in them, enough to make a small but hard hitting army with cavalry, heavy gunners, normal troops, butchers, special characters and the little fellas following (gonna go mad converting some of them for sure).
The cleaning also revealed some Sisters of Battle that has been standing unattended for way too long, along with several units of Space Marines (both fast attack and regular troops). As for the Imperial Guard units, I found four Ogryns (one hardhead and three regulars), one old metal Cadian command squad (the metal one with the regular five troops along with one wounded trooper) that I plan to use as my platoon or regiment command,  and the elite Cadian squad with the sergeant that will be my version of Sergeant Bastonne. Oh, and not to forget at least two squads of Ratling snipers, that also will serve with the Imperial Guard regiment I'm putting together.

Up until now I have had two Detolf display cabinets from IKEA. These cabinets are great for all purposes of showing miniatures off except for one thing... They have so few shelves. They have four shelves for each cabinet and no way of adding more shelves without getting special cut glass and some Gyro Gearloose solutions.
The Detolf cabinets will have to be replaced with Expedit cabinets with glass doors. Instead of eight high shelves I will get thirteen not that high shelves that can be split in to twenty six shelves for regular miniatures or a little less for higher minis.I have measured out that the low shelves will take a giant, and hopefully they will also take the Baneblade tank.
